5. An Epitaph
‘An Epitaph’ is a beautiful short poem, which has been composed by Walter De La Mare. He was awarded the Order of Merit by Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. This poem is related to a woman who was lying under the grave.
The poet stands near a grave and says that there is a beautiful woman lying here. Who used to wander here and there. She was the most beautiful woman in the countries of the West. But her beauty ends.
The poet says that when I am alive, I am remembering him. If I am not there, then there will be no one to remember him.
It is a sentiment of the poet to say that beauty perishes, but moral work remains immortal.
