A burning ghat is a place where dead bodies are burnt. As the poet was passing through the river, he saw embers which were mercilessly burning the dead.

The poet says that 21 years ago I had set my first child on fire. Because the Tower of Silence was thousands of miles away.
The poet takes an oath that I will protect them from the sin of fire. That is, I will not hand over any of my children to the fire. He accepts that fire can ruin everything.
